iPhone Charging: Why Won’t It Power Up?
If your iPhone isn’t charging, don’t panic. Before you assume the battery is dead, follow this checklist to find the “clog” in the system.

1. The “Pocket Lint” Problem (The #1 Fix)
If your charging cable feels “mushy” when you plug it in, or if it falls out easily, your charging port is likely full of lint.
- The Symptom: You have to wiggle the cord to get it to charge, or it only charges at a certain angle.
- The Action: Take a wooden toothpick or a plastic dental flosser. Gently—very gently—scrape the inside of the charging port on the bottom of your phone. You will be shocked at how much lint and dust comes out.
- Warning: Never use a metal needle or paperclip for this. Metal can short out the gold pins inside and permanently break your phone.
2. Cables and Blocks: The “Original” Rule
Apple devices are very picky about the electricity they receive.
- The “Liquid Detected” Alert: If you see this message, your port is damp. Do not plug it in. Let it air dry for at least 2 hours. Do not use a hairdryer, as the heat can melt the internal seals.
- Non-Apple Cables: If you bought a cheap cable from a gas station, your iPhone might show a message saying “Accessory Not Supported.” * The Action: Look for the MFi (Made for iPhone) logo on the box when buying cables. If you don’t see it, the cable might work for a week and then stop once the phone’s software updates.
- The “Wall Block” Test: If you are charging from a laptop USB port, it will be much slower than a wall outlet. Try a different “brick” in a different wall outlet to rule out a blown fuse in your house.
3. Wireless Charging (MagSafe)
If your plug-in port is broken, you can still charge your phone!
- The Workaround: Most iPhones (iPhone 8 and newer) can charge wirelessly. If your charging port is totally broken, you can buy a MagSafe or Qi Wireless Charger. You just set the phone on top of the pad, and it charges through the back glass.
- The Case Gap: If you have a very thick “rugged” case or a metal pop-socket on the back, wireless charging will not work. Take the case off and try again.
4. Software: Why is it Stuck at 80%?
If your phone charges to 80% and then stops, your phone isn’t broken—it’s actually being smart.
- Optimized Battery Charging: This is a feature in iOS 26 that learns your routine. If you charge your phone overnight, it stays at 80% to protect the battery and finishes the last 20% right before you wake up.
- The Heat Pause: If your phone feels hot to the touch, Apple will pause charging at 80% to protect the battery from permanent heat damage.
- The Action: Take the phone out of its case and move it to a cooler room. Charging will resume once the temperature drops.
5. When to Replace the Battery
Batteries are like tires—they wear out over time.
- Check the Health: Go to
Settings>Battery> Battery Health & Charging. - The Magic Number: If your “Maximum Capacity” is below 80%, your phone will start to feel slow, and the battery will drain quickly.
- The Action: If you are under 80%, it’s time to visit a repair shop for a battery swap. This usually costs between $69 and $99 and makes your phone feel brand new again.
Summary Checklist for Charging Issues:
- Clean the port with a wooden toothpick.
- Try a different cable (specifically an Apple-certified one).
- Check your wall outlet (try a different room).
- Restart the phone (Force Restart: Up, Down, hold Side Button).
